USQ Hosts Centre for Future Materials Open Day
University of Southern Queensland (USQ)’s composites research and development was on display when the Centre for Future Materials (CFM) held its inaugural Open Day.
More than 140 delegates attended the day of presentations and demonstrations with external industry representatives from sectors including aerospace, defence, space, transport, mining and construction.
The Open Day programme featured a range of industry-focused research presentations and posters highlighting the Centre’s four priority areas: manufacturing next-generation aerospace composites, pioneering functional composites, advancing civil composite applications, and developing green geopolymers.
The programme included talks from two industry guest speakers who gave an insight into their sectors, highlighting the challenges currently being addressed and future opportunities in defence and rail infrastructure. Dr Paul Callus, Deputy Director S&T JSF – Air Vehicle Systems, Defence Science and Technology Group, Australian Department of Defence, discussed Challenges in Defence Aerospace Materials, and Murray Adams, General Manager, Austrak, discussed Opportunities in Railway Materials and Structures.
The one-minute quick-fire presentations, with 29 researchers delivering elevator pitches in 29 minutes, provided delegates with a snapshot of all research activity at CFM.
The delegates visited the newly refurbished 1000 m2 laboratory, where the researchers showcased current research on shape memory composites, natural fibre feeding stock 3D printing, composite manufacturing pressure mapping, permeability rig, thermoelectric composites, fireproof wall panel and rock bolt double shear rig.
